New Year, New You? What is Upskilling and Why Do It?

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

― Dr. Seuss

What is upskilling?

Upskilling is the process of learning and acquiring more advanced skills through additional education and training, new skills that will help with your vocational and career opportunities. It could be learning new skills for the job you already have, the job you want or skills that will help your prospects in a new industry.

4 Key Benefits of Upskilling

1. It can create opportunity

Study and development doesn’t end once you graduate school, Uni or TAFE. Upskilling whilst you’re working can create pathways to progress in your current role and looks favourable when opportunities and promotions arise within your organisation.

2. Uncover hidden talents and passions

When you try something new and learn new skills, you can uncover strengths in things you may not have ever expected. This could broaden your thinking and approach to your career.

3. It enhances your resume

Skills make your resume. By upskilling you will be adding new areas of expertise to your resume. This will show growth and that you are keen to improve and learn.

4. It keeps you up-to-date

When you upskill, you expose yourself to new market and industry trends, keeping your skills current and in-line with modern practice. You may also able to meet new people and make new networking and industry connections.
