Kempsey local Tara is a single mum, responsible for the care of her three young children.
Needing support to engage with community and prepare for employment, Tara was linked to CHESS Connect mentor Karen and the ParentsNext Program.
Tara’s first activity in the ParentsNext program was taking her younger daughter to Macleay Play and Stay playgroup, where she was able to connect with other local parents and families. Soon after, Tara set herself a goal to study aged and community care and play to her strengths as a natural people person and nurturer.
On a pathway to employment
With her new goal in mind and the support of her ParentsNext mentor, Tara attended a TAFE information session in January 2019 and enrolled to commence study the following month.
During her study, Tara’s mentor at CHESS Connect was able to support her through the ParentsNext program by supplying fuel assistance to attend TAFE, support to access resources to study and apply for work opportunities as well as funding to purchase work related clothing.
Through her own motivation and with support from the ParentsNext Program, Tara was able to complete her training and work placement within 6 months. Encouraged by what she’d learnt and with new found confidence and skills, Tara was ready to start looking for work.
Promising days ahead
After interviewing in her local area Tara was successful in securing casual employment in an aged care facility, a role that suited her family commitments and work life balance.
Tara is looking forward to promising days ahead, being a good role model for her children, continuing in her new role and working toward permanent employment in the future.
