Coffs Harbour local, Amy, knew she wanted to work with animals since she was 5 years old. And CHESS Connect was on hand to help her land her dream job.

CHESS Connect Recruitment Partner, Daniela, worked with Amy to build her resume to suit the role she wanted and to start the job search process, securing a PaTH internship with Coffs Harbour Veterinary Hospital.

“We lived on the farm and Dad was a dog breeder. I was always asking to help – I loved holding the puppies! The passion I had for caring from animals grew from there,” says Amy.

Amy started her Cert II in Veterinary Nursing at TAFE after leaving school and worked part-time in retail. She was fortunate enough to find some work placements in vet clinics across the North Coast and was eager to seek assistance in gaining a permanent position.

CHESS Connect Recruitment Partner, Daniela, was on hand to help. Together they built Amy’s resume to suit the role she wanted and started the job search process. Daniela accompanied Amy to Vet Clinics around the Coffs Coast to connect with employers and discuss possible opportunities with work placements, PaTH Internships and wage subsidies.

As part of the PaTH internship, Amy engaged with Coffs Harbour Veterinary Hospital in December 2019.

“We were grateful to have Daniela online to assist with the PATH Internship,” said Darlene, Manager at Coffs Harbour Veterinary Hospital. “It’s a big process and investment of time. But Daniela helped us focus on the big picture; the opportunity to give a young person work placement experience in a role that they are passionate about.”

Darlene was also particularly impressed with Amy’s presentation, willingness to work and rapport with their customers. She was able to showcase her calm and confident approach to using her nursing skills and was open and eager to learn new skills.

“Veterinary Nursing is a sought-after career in this area,” says Darlene. “There is always a greater volume of applicants than there are positions available. It’s a competitive job market and it comes with its own set of challenges.”

“When we’re recruiting we’re looking for someone who has the right qualifications, but also someone who embodies the values of our team.”

Since completing her Internship, Amy has continued to work at Coffs Harbour Veterinary Hospital as a valued member of the team, engaging with customers and providing nursing aid to each of the animals in her care – a favourite part of her role.

What’s Amy’s advice for other young people looking for work on the Coffs Coast?

“Whatever there is to learn – learn it! Stay positive. If you’re looking for work, don’t give up and keep persisting. Find and pursue as many opportunities as you can, go back to the same business more than once, if they not looking for staff now, they might be later. “

What are PaTH Internships?

PaTH Internships are short placements in the workplace that give young people an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to a potential employer, develop vocational skills and improve their employment prospects. At the same time, employers have the opportunity to trial young job seekers in a structured work experience placement, to see if they are the right fit for their business.
